In that year on june 14th a small group of settlers took control of the garrison at sonoma and declared california an independent republic from mexico. This became known as the bear flag revolt after the hastily designed flag with white field and red bar with a grizzly bear and a five pointed red star and the words "california republic" under them. The flag flew for only a short time until july 9, 1846 when they learned that the united states and mexico were at war. The bear flag was replaced soon after with the american flag. The modern version of the bear flag was adopted in 1911. The grizzly bear is a symbol of the great strength of state itself and the red star makes reference to the lone star of texas and symbolizes freedom.
